why you should try this chocolate hummus recipe
If you’ve never had dessert hummus – you’re in for a real treat. This recipe is so much better than store bought. Here’s why:
- better ingredients – most store bought dessert hummus is made with high fructose corn syrup or a lot of extra sugar. This homemade chocolate hummus is sweetened with brown sugar, but you can also use maple syrup
- easy to make – all you need to make this is a food processor or blender!
- great dessert for warmer weather (no oven required) – if it’s too hot to turn on your oven, this recipe is perfect!
Ingredients:
To make chocolate hummus you’ll need:
- Chickpeas – Make sure to rinse and drain them!
- Peanut butter – Smooth or crunchy will work, but make sure it doesn’t have added sugar.
- Cocoa powder – Uses a good quality unsweetened cocoa powder.
- Brown sugar – Maple syrup works too
- Vanilla extract – helps to add flavor
- Salt
- Milk – Whole milk was used in this recipe, but you can use whatever kind you want!
- Chocolate chips – We like to add some extra on top but these are optional!
You can find substitutions for all of these ingredients below in the green shaded box. A food processor or blender is also helpful.

SUBSTITUTIONS/VARIATIONS:
Chickpeas: I haven’t tried this with other beans, but another mild flavor bean like cannellini beans might work. Without trying, I can’t be sure.
Peanut Butter: You can substitute peanut butter for almond butter. I have not tried sunflower butter, but I think it would work.
Brown Sugar: You can substitute brown sugar with 1/3 cup maple syrup. I have not tried this recipe with coconut sugar.
Milk: Feel free to use regular dairy milk, or non dairy milk – either will work.
Vanilla Extract: You can also use almond extract – both are delicious!
How to Make the best Chocolate Dessert Hummus

- Add all ingredients, except chocolate chips, to the bowl of a food processor.

- Process on high for 1-2 minutes, until smooth. Add extra milk if needed until the hummus has reached the desired consistency.

- Top with chocolate chips.

- Serve with your favorite dippers.
How to Serve Dessert Hummus
Dessert hummus is great with both sweet and salty dipping options. Some of our favorite things to dip are:
- Fruit – Strawberries and pineapple are my favorite
- Pretzels (we like the thin, flat ones!)
- Graham crackers
- Any type of cookie
- Pizzelles
- Banana Chips
- Potato Chips (sounds weird.. but the sweet and salty combo is good!)
Liz’s Tips for the best hummus:
- Add extra milk if you like a thinner hummus
- Remove the skins of the chickpeas for a smoother hummus (it’s extra work but it does make a difference!)
- Cut back on the sugar – if you like a less sweet dessert, cut the sugar in half (you can always add more sweetener after blending!)

How to Store
Storing: This will last in the refrigerator for up to 3 days in an airtight container.
Freezing: You can’t freeze dessert hummus, the texture will get yucky!
