BIM in Small Practices: Illustrated Case Studies
BIM (Building Information Modelling) is revolutionising architecture and construction, as more and more practices are realising the benefits it brings to design, sustainability, and construction. There is a perception that BIM is a process best left to large practices – requiring significant resources and the ability to invest heavily in IT. This book overturns that misconception: introducing a selection of inspirational BIM-enabled projects by small architectural practices.

Full of practical tips and hard-won experience, BIM in Small Practices: Illustrated Case Studies includes pithy contributions from industry experts who identify and explore the important issues for small practices including how to get your practice started with BIM, and how it aligns to the new Plan of Work. This landmark publication will motivate small practices who are considering taking those first steps towards implementing BIM.

Very useful for small practices...diverse, well-written with a good range of experiences and topics. The case studies are all interesting in their own right.

BIM in Small Practices provides an comprehensive overview of how Building Information Modelling  can support the design and delivery of projects irrespective of size and scope. The approach from the selected practices and their case studies, demonstrates the diversity and value that BIM can add to the quality of design and information developed within each work stage with the key lessons learnt providing a very useful insight into the benefits each discovered along their own BIM journey

John Eynon, Chair of the SEBIMHUB and Vice Chair of BIM4SME
This book busts a few myths about BIM and also, I think, points the way for the future of the profession.
Myth 1 - BIM is for large projects. No! Examples in this book include residential conversions, extensions and a self build house.
Myth 2 – BIM is only for new buildings. No! There are lots of examples here of work involving existing buildings at all stages.
These case studies from hands on practices illustrate and explain the use of BIM right at the grass roots, providing practical examples and plain speaking advice for any practitioner at whatever point on your BIM journey.
I recommend this book to all architects – this is required reading for anyone thinking about starting their BIM journey or already on the road.

Professor David Philp, Head of BIM UK BIM Task GroupWe are witnessing early SME adopters of BIM punching well above their weight and levelling the playing field against their bigger competitors, offering added value, less risk and better outcomes.  As you will see through the case studies in this book BIM is helping design practices and their customers better understand solutions through virtual prototyping and generally building better before built in a digital environment. From better spatial co-ordination, rapid optioneering to self-generation of data sheets the list of opportunities for the small practice is a large one.
Hopefully this book will inspire you to make change in your organisation. To either start doing BIM or perhaps accelerate your implementation.  To paraphrase Clint Eastwood “sometimes if you want to see a change for the better, you have to take things into your own hands.”
